January’s President’s Report

January President’s Report

First I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. 2018 was a very successful year for Robertson Memorial. Your Executive is planning and setting goals for 2019 to ensure we have another positive year for Members and Branch No 17. January has been a busy month so far for Legion Staff and your Executive.

One of our goals from 2018 was to raise the money to upgrade our security camera inside the Legion and to install cameras on the outside of the building. Thanks to the generous support of members and their friends for our TV Raffle and a generous donation of $1000.00 from the Ladies Auxiliary, we are in the process of fulfilling this goal and all should be in place by the end of January.

One of goals for last year that continued into 2019 was to clean up the History room and to clean up and organize our store rooms. Thanks to Roger Beebe and his work crew we are seeing progress daily. Hopefully the History room, though small, will be a place where members can go and review photos and memorabilia pertaining to our Veterans and our Legion.

Our Legion continues to host Line Dancing every day of the week except Tuesday. Also we have Darts every Monday and Thursday afternoon in the Legion. Schooners Pub continues to host Darts for the young people from CORE. Also there is a Pool League that meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well as Pool and Dart Leagues in the evening in Schooners Pub. Every Thursday evening there is a Dine and Dance Evening open to all. The Buffet is $12 and the Dance is $5.00.

As you can see we are very busy and trying to meet the needs of our community in a variety of ways. January 23 there was a gin rummy tournament in the Canteen. We are hoping this can continue and perhaps add Euchre and Crib. If you are interested in playing or have some other ideas please contact the Office or a member of the Executive.

Our Valentine raffle is a Basket containing an assortment of alcohol including a bottle of Chevas Regal, Biccardi’s White rum, and Peppermint Schnapps. Other items such as a black wine carrier with opener and cork, a wine cooler, 2 crystal beer mugs, 2 shot glasses, 2 liqueur glasses, 4 wooden coaster, chocolates, cheese board, variety of cheese utensils and other items including a nice basket containing the items. Tickets are now on sale for $2/each or 3 for $5.

Breakfast is on again cooked and served by the students from Cypress College Culinary School. So far the reports have been very positive. I would like to remind you that all the profits from the breakfasts are donated to the Legion.

On January 17th I attended the unveiling of a painting by a local artist depicting the 175 CMR on the hillside by the trans-Canada Highway. I have a card with the picture that we will try to post on our website.

I received a thank you card from CFB Suffield thanking us for a job well done on November 11. Thank you is extended to all the Committee members who helped to organize.

We have signed the papers with the Stampede Board and will once again be involved in the $10,000 Cash Draw. Tickets are being printed and we will be requesting your help once again to help with this very profitable enterprise. We will be contacting members in the future to assist either before the Stampede or during to sell the tickets. Please think about how you can help us.

Thanks again to Lucille Bailey and all the Bingo volunteers for all that they do on a regular basis to help our Legion financially. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Thanks you to our great Bar Staff and Office staff. Together we are working closely as a team to ensure that we meet the needs of our Veterans and their families as well as our members and our community. Our Legion is available for Birthdays, Showers, Funerals and other events. Just contact the Office for further information.

Our Legion is blessed to have Diane and Amanda preparing the meals in our kitchen. These girls believe in the Legion and work hard to serve meals that our customers enjoy. Thanks for all that you do. I am still hearing they make the best pizzas in town.

Just a reminder that the Legion is open for lunch every day so we invite you to come on down, support your Legion and bring a friend. The prices are good but the food is great.

Respectfully submitted,

Sheila Donner, President
